Analyising previous student work

On this particular video titled breakaway made by last years long road students, there are numerous aspects of music video making techniques that make the video successful.
To begin with the camerawork is varied using different lengths of shot. For example many mid range shots are used to show the main performer so the audience concentrates on her and her performance. However long range shots are shown at some points to give variety and keep the audience interested. Close ups of the performers face are also used to show emotion on her face. Also where the performer is positioned changes to add more variety.
The editing is also done well in conjuction with the genre of the song and video. The shots go on for a long time, this fits the pace of the song. If many quick cuts were used then it would not fit and would have the wrong effect. Transitions are also used for example a fade from a black backround to a shot of the perfromer on a sofa. This transition works well because it is a slow pace and fits the genre of the song. Also the editing bewteen the little girl on the home footage to the grown woman works well because it gives the performer depth.
The setting works well firstly at the characters house and then moving on to what looks like a band playing behind her. The setting suits the genre of the emotional song.
Moving on to the performer who performs very well. The track has been edited so it looks like she is really singing. She puts a lot of effort in to the performance and it looks proffesional.
The genre of this song appears to be an emotional love song. This is reflected by the setting of the characters house and her sitting alone.

the way inwhich the song is sung into the camera is what we are hoping to do with our video.

Use of colour

we want to use alot of colour to brighten up our video and make it more fun. We've found some music videos that we can get some ideas from.

track cutting

Today we began to cut our music track using final cut. We cut the beginning and the end of the track due to its length. We need the track to be roughly 3 minutes instead of it's oringal length of 5 minutes. We decided to fade the track out before the end of it to shorten it as best we could.

lesson 4

Today we've cut down our track after realising that it is 5 minutes long which would cause our video ideas to drag on alot.
We've also begun to put our storyboard together and are hoping that this will make our ideas clearer and show exactly what we plan to do for our music video.

Our settings and shots

We have started to develop our ideas and discuss the actual locations of where we can film our video. We have a member of the group which plays the drums and have also spoken to someone to see if they would consider playing the guitar for us. We are going to use Luke's garage to film the first section of the video as he has the drums which we are going to be using. We need to find a graffiti area where we can shoot the section of the video where the band is walking along singing into the camera but we think this will be relatively simple to find. At the end of the video we want to get a big crowd to show the bands success and have the idea of briefly filming as though the camera is one of the crowd as we think this will look effective and give a bigger variety to our use of camera shots. We will also have quick cuts throughout the video as the song does get faster in some parts. We want the video to keep the audience interested and encourage them to like the song and hope that our ideas will do this.

costume ideas

We've decided to look at what style of costume we could wear in the video. After researching the style of the ting tings themselves we have decided to base our costumes on their style. We think this will work as their style isnt too defined or unique so we will be able to incorporate it into our band without it looking unrealistic. We want our band to look as though they fit together and work as a group and having a similar style will help this work.

Lyrics

Four letter word just to get me along
It's a difficulty and i'm biting on my tongue and I
I keep stalling, keeping me together
People around gotta find something to say now

Holding back, everyday the same
Don't wanna be a loner
Listen to me, oh no
I never say anything at all
But with nothing to consider they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

They call me 'hell'
They call me 'Stacey'
They call me 'her'
They call me 'Jane'
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

They call me 'quiet girl'
But i'm a riot
Maybe 'Joleisa'
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

I miss the catch if they through me the ball
I'm the last kid standing up against the wall
Keep up, falling, these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now

So alone all the time at night
Lock myself away
Listen to me, i'm not
Although i'm dressed up, out and all with
Everything considered they forget my name
(ame, ame, ame)

They call me 'hell'
They call me 'Stacey'
They call me 'her'
They call me 'Jane'
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

They call me 'quiet girl'
But i'm a riot
Maybe 'Joleisa'
Always the same
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name
That's not my name

Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?
Are you calling me darling?
Are you calling me bird?

...continues with chorus overlapping

Video research

We have researched some videos on youtube to see if our ideas can be shown more cleary from videos that have already been made by well known artists.

This is one of the first videos we looked looked at. We found that our idea of beginning in a garage and doing close ups of the instruments seemed to relate to the very beginning of this video. Although the majority of this particular video isnt really relevant to our idea, the first few shots relate quite well to how we'd like our start of the video to be.

This next video 'cant touch this, shows alot of the artist singing directly to the audience, keeping them interested and drawing attention to him. We want to use a similar idea for part of out video. The band we have chosen seems alot more rocky than this song however we believe that the idea could still be a success.
We like the sense of symetry in this video and think it works really well for this song however dont think our chosen song could incorporate this as well.

This video best represents the type of filming we are looking to use. There are alot of quick shots which adds to the upbeat music.
The camera follows the people for alot of the video which we think will go really well with the genre of the song we have chosen.

Music video ideas 1

We are going to have roughly 4 settings throughout the song. The first scene will be set in a garage with the band singing at the beggining of their career as teenagers we thought this would represent the element of the pop genre. Then the setting will change and we will have the lead singer walkin along getting ready for a performance with the camera following her. Then the next scene will be set in a park with a few of their friends and people wathcing them. The last scene will be on a main stage with a big audience with the band ending their song. We Will also add in lots of effects such as split screens and fast cuts as the song is upbeat and fun.

Music Video Ideas 2

Ideas:

We have been dicussing how the song sounds like the result of a college band. The band actually has just two members, one male and one female, however we think we could get away with using more than two people in the video and that this may be successful.
We have had the idea of the video starting in a garage where most college bands seem to practice and rehearse..
As the song starts the drums come in and for this we think it would be a good idea to start the video with a close up of the drums..then as the singer begins, we could have a close up of her against the microphone.
We think this will work as there is only the drum as the background music when the song first begins.
As the song goes on we are going to use a variety of shots, keeping in beat with the music to make the audience interested and want to carry on watching. For the rest of the video we are going to use a variety of settings to keep the video from being repetative. We want to use the garage as one setting then have thought of some shots being of the singer walking along down the street against some grafitti on a wall or something similar, singing into thew camera using lots of expression and singing directly to the audience making them feel involved and able to relate perhaps.
The story of our video will be of a college band who makes it big as the video comes to an end. The song is called 'thats not my name'..referring to the fact that people seem to get the girl's name wrong, however we have decided to take the name of the song and also relate it to the video in the fact that they start off as a small college band who no-one has heard of and people dont know the name of them and then as they go on and become famous, they become well known. We want the video to eventually show the band on a big stage to show their sucess.
